What is an infinity pool?

 

To best explain an infinity swimming pool, imagine a waterfall. The water flows from a height, and then seems to disappear, right?   In actuality, the water flows to a lower level, and overflows as the volume increases.   The mechanism of an infinity pool is similar.  The pool is built a level lower than the original level. This acts as a catchment for the pool, and the water is pushed upward, creating an optical illusion for a pool, which flows over the edge.

 

Infinity pools can come by many different names.  They’re also commonly known as vanishing edge, zero edge or negative edge pools, among other terms.

History claims that, the origin of infinity pool was in France in Versailles, around 17th century. In the US, John Lautner, an architect, has often been given the credit as one of the firsts to come up with an infinity pool design in the early 1960s.

 

Is background important?

Background is important to create a proper optical illusion, which won't happen if the catch basin is too large, the background landscape is too close or there isn't much of a drop off. To create a proper effect, it is important to align the submerged edge with the right background.

 

Are infinity pools dangerous?

As daunting as it might seem in the beginning about falling into a chasm, infinity pools are not dangerous in nature. There is a basin a few feet below zero edge to catch the water. Infinity pools are just an optical illusion.
